This study was designed to provide schools, districts, and states with a means for identifying the knowledge and skills that are most important for students to learn in the subject areas of language arts, mathematics, and science. The standards and benchmarks in this document reflect the subject-area content consistently identified in documents from a handful of states that have been highly rated by national organizations for the quality of their standards.
