Transition Magician for Families: Helping Parents and Children with Everyday Routines.
Chvojicek, Ruth; Henthorne, Mary; Larson, Nola
The third volume in the Transition Magician series, this book is designed to help early childhood professionals in supporting the parents of young children. The book provides activities for parents and young children for home and away from home to guide children through difficult transition times and to make the most of valuable opportunities for building skills and relationships. Chapter 1 discusses ways early childhood professionals can support parents to help their children manage transitions. The next five chapters present a collection of activities to use during everyday transition times. The activities are divided into five categories according to the type of transition in which they might be used, and children's developmental needs during transition times. The transition categories are: (1) everyday routines, such as leaving the house in the morning, picking up toys, or getting ready for bed; (2) busy time, when parents are busy with household routines and responsibilities; (3) together times, quality activities for parent and child in between the routines of the day; (4) on the move activities for travel time, both to school or child care and on longer trips; and (5) while you wait, activities while waiting at the doctor's office, laundry, or religious services. All activities are written in a reproducible form so that they may be photocopied and given to parents. The final chapter shows how early childhood programs can design and set up two workshops--one for parents only and the other for parents and children--using the transition ideas and props from this book. Three appendices include a list of eight resources, workshop activity lists, and handouts and examples. (KB)
