This book helps teachers develop personal plans of action to handle classroom discipline, offering progressive Plan A and Plan B strategies. Plan A strategies take seconds to implement. Plan B strategies take more time but are designed to turn around specific attitudes and behaviors. After an introduction, there are 9 chapters: (1) "Misbehaviors and Their Causes"; (2) "Usual Discipline Methods and Their Drawbacks" (e.g., threats, lectures, rewards, punishment, anger, commands, and notes to parents); (3) "Commonsense Principles of 'Smart Discipline'"; (4) "Effective Prevention Strategies" (e.g., welcome students, express appreciation, call home, predict success, and list misplaced behaviors); (5) "Strategies for Minor Misbehaviors (Plan A)" (e.g., invade space, touch shoulder, smile and request, change locations, give information, give choices, and respect the struggle); (6) "Strategies for the Most Difficult Behaviors (Plan B)" (e.g., write notes, express strong feelings, use time-out, analyze and plan, inform parents, give responsibilities, and plan for amends); (7) "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Strategies" (e.g., choose close proximity, give covert reminders, refocus, slow tempo, and facilitate insights); (8) "Parental Support and Involvement"; and (9) "Your Personal 'Smart Discipline' Plan."
