A Brief History of the Management World of the UMCP Libraries.
Merikangas, Robert
This paper presents a brief history of the management of the University of Maryland at College Park (UMCP) Libraries. An Introduction addresses these questions: Why tell a history of the management of the Libraries? Why a history right now? What is the recommended methodology for creating a history of the management of a library? The paper consists of three main parts. Part One: General Time Line and Major Events, provides information on directors of the Libraries; major changes in the organization structure; evaluations; study of professional positions and the need for clerical support; Stress Intervention Program; Library Administrative Review Committee; Director's speech to staff (February 24, 1994); strategic planning; libraries in the campus strategic plan; vision for the Libraries; and selection of new director. Part Two: Selected Specific Management Issues focuses on budget; continuous quality improvement; electronic resources (computer files); friends of the Libraries; the undergraduate library; management training and development; personnel administration; staff and management-sponsored projects; Public Services Division organization and communication issues; relations with other campus libraries and collections; relations with UMS and various external groups; special services based in the Libraries; staff and user suggestions and complaints; staff organizations; and staff publications. Part Three: Interpretations and Questions that Arise from Reflection on the History identifies some questions for management to consider. (AEF)
