Virginia Telemedia Systems for Administrative, Training and Educational Uses.

This report describes the telecommunications systems currently available in Virginia to deliver educational materials and conduct administrative meetings and training in a cost effective manner. Examples are provided of how state agencies and institutions in Virginia are using each of the technologies and the future potential of each system is considered. Guidelines are provided for determining which distribution technology to use to achieve a given purpose. Specific technologies described are audio teleconferencing; radio; slow scan television; public television stations; microwave and Instructional Television Fixed Service; cable television; satellites; and fiber optics. Appended are a teleconferencing growth chart; Department of Information Technology and Council on Information Management legislation; a policy statement on the acquisition of services, equipment, and facilities; radio, public television, microwave and satellite coverage maps; a state satellite downlink map; and a directory of Virginia Cooperative Extension Service downlinks. A glossary of terms used in the report is also provided. (GL)
