Development of a National Information Center on Deafness. Final Report on National Survey of Information Needs and Services Relating to Hearing Impairment.
Harslem, Barbara P.; Hawkins-Shepard, Charlotte
A national survey was conducted as part of the development of a planned information center on deafness at Gallaudet College. The survey examined information needs and services relating to hearing impairment, including areas of greatest information need and the possibility of liaison and exchanges with other organizations developing and disseminating informational materials. Usable responses were received from 1,057 organizations (a 74% response) of which 921 receive information inquiries, with the mean number of inquiries 13 per week. The most commonly requested information is on: deafness in general, manual communication/sign language, lipreading/speechreading/speech, interpreter services, hearing aids, and telecommunication devices. Other common requests concern mainstreaming, multiply handicapped deaf people, philosophy/methods of teaching deaf children, parent education, medical/diagnostic subjects, legislation, teacher training, and religious services. The greatest difference between number of inquiries and amount of information available was on the topic of multiply handicapped deaf people. Although parents are the most frequent requestors of information, educators, students, deaf adults, and the general public also make information requests. The findings confirm the need for a central information center so that requests are handled by information providers prepared to respond appropriately. The major portion of the document consists of 92 tables detailing the findings of the survey and appendices that include the survey instruments, comments of respondents, and a list of participating organizations. References are provided. (DB)
