A revised and updated version of a 1983 automation plan, this report describes the long range program for resource sharing activities by the library network in Massachusetts, a program which is funded in part by the Library Services and Construction Act. The basis of the network--the development, continuation, and linking of machine-readable databases and physical access points into the information resources of the state's libraries--is detailed and the shared resources provided in cataloging/interlibrary loan services, reference/database services, and circulation/interlibrary loan services are considered. Major aspects of the program are described, including funding, governance, needs, goals, and evaluation. Three major recommendations are discussed in detail: (1) the development of access points into informational resources, and development and linking of databases to provide greater access opportunities to resources; (2) the facilitation of document request and document delivery procedures; and (3) the development of an ongoing education program on resource sharing. An appendix lists points to consider when developing cooperative arrangements among libraries, and details the operational guidelines of the Network Advisory Committee of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.
