Citizenship and Education in the United States of America. Report on a Tour of Five Weeks through the United States in the Autumn of 1985 Made on the Invitation of the U.S. Information Agency (USIA).
Bos, Roelof
The United States Information Agency (USIA) invited four Dutch educators to make a five-week tour through the United States during the 1985-1986 school year. The goal was "to award and administer United States Educational Development grants to qualified foreign educators...to enable them to observe educational methods and practices, to see school administration and supervision at selected U.S. educational institutions, and to promote the general interest of international educational exchange." Members of the group were particularly interested in social studies, secondary-school management, unions, and journalism. The cities visited were: Washington, D.C., Milwaukee, Dallas, Denver, Boulder, San Francisco, San Diego, New York, and Bloomington, Indiana. Contents of this personal narrative are: (1) "Washington, D.C."; (2) "Officials"; (3) "Schools"; (4) "Unions"; (5) "Universities"; (6) "Publishers"; (7) "Hosts"; (8) "What I Learned"; (9) "What I Suggest"; (10) "What I Can Do"; and a literature list.
