Test results are presented for the Spring 1986 administration of North Carolina's Annual Testing Program. A new edition of the California Achievement Tests (CAT) was administered that year; tests included reading, mathematics language and spelling. Public school students in grades 1, 2, 3, 6, and 8 were tested. Results are presented for the entire state, the eight geographic regions in North Carolina, and the 141 local education agencies. Scores are presented as grade equivalent scores and as percentile ranks. The North Carolina Science Tests (NCST) were also administered in grades 3, 6, and 8. Knowledge in three areas was tested (life, physical, and earth and space science), as well as process skills--the ability to apply general science concepts to a specified situation. This document consists almost entirely of data tables. Major results include: (1) the average North Carolina student scored at or above the national norm in all CAT subject areas in all grades; (2) national CAT norms were 15 percent higher on the 1985 test than on the 1977 edition; (3) North Carolina has an equal or greater proportion of students scoring at or above the 77th percentile; and (4) there is a consistent relationship between student attendance and achievement.
