Relationships of Institutional and Athletic Program Characteristics to AIAW Divisional Declarations and Number of Sports.
Feldmann, Marilyn E.
The purpose of this study was to determine the institutional and athletic characteristics that had the greatest relationship to divisional declarations in selected sports in women's athletic programs and the number of sports offered in women's athletic programs. Institutions were grouped according to similar characteristics, e.g., enrollment, financial support, degrees offered, and type of institution. The results indicate that the majority of institutions are placing their men's and women's sports in the same competitive division. However, there are many men's programs that are in a more competitive division than the women's programs are, while there are very few women's sports in a more competitive division than the men's programs. As a result, it could be concluded that some institutions are not providing the same opportunities for women as they are for men in regard to divisional declarations. It also appears that the majority of institutions are not offering the same opportunities to women as they are to men, since the men's programs generally offer a larger number of sports activities.
