The development of the model program was accomplished by: (1) establishing linkages with other agencies and educational institutions in the community; (2) reviewing the pertinent research literature; (3) carrying out a needs assessment in order to determine the educational needs and interests of elderly residents as well as the problems facing staff members of skilled nursing facilities; and (4) determining whether or not the model program would result in unnecessary duplication of services with other educational institutions in the community serving the elderly. The report describes in detail the procedures, activities, strategies, and components of the model program implemented during the 1976-77 school year. The program should serve as a model for other school districts planning ways to meet the needs of elderly residents in health care facilities. (Author)
