Cranking Out Adventure: A Bike Leader's Guide to Trial and Error Touring.

The product of a 3,355 mile bicycle trip involving a co-ed group of teenagers and a leader (N=12), this guide to bike riding trips presents practical and philosophical insights gained by the Project Adventure leader who conducted the trip. Detailed lists of pre- and on-trip requirements are presented. Specifically, there are sections devoted to each of the following: pre-trip conditioning; recommended changes in bicycle components (technical information re: bicycle parts, purchasing, etc.); miscellaneous bike and gear information; clothes and comfort items; wet weather riding; safety (specific dangerous situations are described and a number of safety tips are presented); medical problems; emergency first aid (training necessary and kit contents); hygiene; alcohol, cigarettes, narcotics, and other crutches (not allowed); bike repair and maintenance; flat tires (step by step instructions for fixing a flat most efficiently); the bicycle as a whipping post (taking out frustrations on the bike); night riding; group travel (group interaction); resting and pacing; gear ego (use of a gear appropriate to the situation); uphill vs downhill biking; the use of an odometer; drafting or slip streaming (riding behind another biker); motorized transportation; wind; boredom; junk food; gourmet section; eating and cooking utensils; camping; insects; mail stops and phone calls; the barn door phenomenon (desire to get home); being lost (what to do); liability; photography; publicity; bridges and ferries; traveller's checks; a leader's approach; journal notes; and copy of cross-continent trip presentation.
