This report is based on the U.S. Office of Education's 13th annual survey of students enrolled for advanced degrees in institutions of higher education in the U.S. The publication provides detailed data for individual institutions, as well as summary data by state, discipline specialty, and institutional control and level. Highlights of the report include (for students enrolled for master's and doctor's degrees): (1) Enrollments in programs leading to master's and doctor's degrees totaled 836,294 in fall 1971, an increase of 2.5 percent over enrollments reported in fall 1970. (2) Between 1970 and 1971, full-time enrollments increased more than part-time. (3) Gains for women, both in numbers and percent, were greater than for men between 1970 and 1971. Highlights for students enrolled for first-professional degrees in selected discipline specialties include: (1) In fall 1971, 190,749 students were enrolled in first-professional degree programs in the selected discipline specialties covered by this survey. (2) Between 1970 and 1971, enrollment of women increased by 10.6 percent. Appendixes include: reproduction of the survey report form and a taxonomy of instructional programs in higher education. (PG)
