Manpower and Economic Education: A Personal and Social Approach to Career Education. [And Teachers Manual].
Darcy, Robert L.; Powell, Phillip E.
Young people can do a better job of preparing for the future if they are given an opportunity to learn more about the economy, its changing technology and the increasing importance of human resources. Also relevant to career development are questions of values and institutional change. Reflecting these varied concerns, the book is organized into six units: (1) the individual and the nature of work, (2) the economic world: an important part of our social environment, (3) the manpower market, (4) career opportunities in the American economy, (5) rational decision making, values, and career planning, and (6) technology, skills, and investment in education. Intended for use at the junior or secondary level, the 72 lessons require the teacher to play an active role in stimulating and guiding discussion and do not provide for a self-study approach. Each lesson begins with a concise thematic abstract, and the main lesson follows with descriptive and analytical information, statistical data and case studies. The accompanying teacher's manual provides commentaries on the lessons, a reference list, test materials, an attitude inventory, classroom evaluation of curriculum materials, and a directory of Economic Education Councils and Centers.
