Labor Force Participation in the Ghetto: A Study of New York City Poverty Areas.
Offner, Paul
This study examines the question: does location within a metropolitan area have a major effect on the employment, unemployment, hours of work, occupation and earnings of poverty area residents? If so, how does this effect differ among various population groups and can the nature and magnitude of these effects among the different groups be explained. Major emphasis has been given to the quantity of employment in poverty areas rather than the quality of employment. The study has been limited to 379 poverty tracts in New York City; some special 1960 census data for these tracts was examined. A model of labor supply in an urban area is presented along with the empirical results based on the data for New York City poverty areas. (Author)
