This document investigates the interacting patterns of computer support and usage. Data were obtained from an inventory of computers in American higher education, 1967. The data indicated that the overall national picture masks the great variation among institutions of higher education. Four of the 21 findings were the following: (1) In fiscal year (FY) 1967 private institutions received a higher percentage of federal funds than public institutions in their region; (2) Private doctoral institutions in nine regions received significantly more federal funds in FY 1967 as compared to the national average; (3) There is considerable variation among regions in state support for public institutions' computer centers; and (4) Wide variations exist between regions and public and private institutions in the percentage of value of computer services in student course by academic area.
