This index to commentaries on modern playwrights and their plays contains approximately 12,000 entries on 300 American and foreign playwrights, the majority of which are from the twentieth century. Intended for the student, this volume is organized in a single alphabetical listing. Under each playwright's name is a general section where full-length studies are listed as well as references to briefer commentaries in other books. Individual works follow in alphabetical order, with foreign play titles in English. Sources consulted include the PMLA Annual Bibliography, Abstracts of English Studies, and the Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature. Authors of the commentaries include scholars, critics, literary and theatre historians, playwrights, directors, and journalists. Some play reviews have been included, usually for foreign playwrights on whom little source material was available in English or for plays so recent that little critical material has appeared.
