Survey of National Voluntary Organizations and State Committees for Children and Youth on Programs, Research, and Planning in the Fields of Mental Retardation and Birth Defects in Children. Final Report.
National Committee for Children and Youth, Washington, DC.
Four hundred and fourteen agencies were surveyed by questionnaire concerning programs, research, or other activities or services which they were sponsoring for children and youth who are mentally retarded or suffer from brain damage. Agencies included national voluntary, lay, and professional organizations and governor-appointed state committees. It was found that, while many organizations administer programs which would lend themselves to serving retarded and physically handicapped children, less than 50% of the national organizations and 10% of the state committees indicated support for either group. National service organizations, youth organizations, and religious groups were more supportive than professional organizations and societies. The major portion of the report consists of brief program descriptions for each agency which responded affirmatively. (KW)
