A Systems Approach to Biology (SAB).
Bush, Kenneth H.; And Others
This pupil's study guide is intended to be used with audio-taped biology modules. Each of the units (on laboratory techniques, plant and animal diversity, chemistry, cells, energy, microbiology, genetics, and development) contains an abstract providing an overview of the unit, the rationale and performance objectives for each module, questions to be answered, and supplementary materials such as diagrams, keys, and brief explanatory notes. Most units are composed of basic materials, the completion of which will earn a C grade, and additional optional activities which can earn the student grades of A or B. Available optional activities normally require conducting and reporting on some investigation, preparing value position papers on currently debatable topics, assisting other students complete the required materials, and "A/B" tests of 40 items. (Test questions are not included in this guide.) The optional units "Science and Mathematics" and "Ecology" have structures similar to the nine basic units; but the unit "Dissection" contains descriptive dissection guides for freshwater clams, crayfish, earthworms, and frogs.
