Intellectual functioning that ranges three to four standard deviations below the mean (usually 40-54 IQ range), concurrent with adaptive deficiencies -- individuals with a moderate intellectual disability can learn self-help, communication, social, or simple vocational skills but only limited academic skills. Prior to 2015, "Moderate Mental Retardation" was used to index this concept.
