The Metropolitan Achievement Test (MAT) was administered to 35 original Head-Start children three to four years after initial WPPSI testing. WPPSI Verbal IQ did not correlate significantly with any of the subject areas of the MAT, while Performance IQ correlated only moderately with mathematical components of the MAT (r = .42 - .52). A kindergarten class of nine boys and 11 girls took the 1986 Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale (Fourth Edition) and the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence. Correlations of WPPSI IQs with concurrently administered subtests from the WRAT were compared with analogous WISC-R/WRAT correlations in a group of children referred by regular classroom teachers for school psychological services. The Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) was factor analyzed at each of six age levels between four and six-plus years through the method of principal factors. Test records of 89 females and 62 males revealed though questions were misordered for the present sample, misordering was not great enough to seriously affect subtest scores or interpretation of intratest scatter. The study compared the performance of 35 lower SES black kindergarten children on the WPPSI and the 1972 Norm Edition of the Stanford-Binet. Contrary to the findings of previous investigations before the restandardization of the Binet, the WPPSI was found to yield a significantly higher mean IQ than the Binet. (Author)
