The enrollment of students 25 years of age and older is just below 50% of the total student body in American higher education. Research suggested that these adult students should be taught andragogically. The purpose of this study was to determine where undergraduate, adult students are located within the 4-year private, public, and for-profit universities offering baccalaureate degrees in the United States. This research study was an archival, quantitative, data mining study that used data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System for the year 2010. Two MANOVAs were used to analyze the grouping differences in the percentages of enrollments. The first MANOVA examined the two age groups of undergraduate, adult students under 25 years and 25 and older. The second MANOVA investigated enrollment percentages of subcategories from the broader overall category undergraduate, adult students ages 25 and older. The subcategories were students ages 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-49, 50-64, and 65 and older. Of the 1,494 universities participating in this research study, 599 were private, 544 were public, and 351 were for-profit institutions involved in federal student aid programs in the United States. Findings suggested that there was a statistically significant difference in percentages of enrollments for undergraduate students between and among the three types of universities according to age. Adult students enroll in for-profit universities at almost double the enrollment rate at either public or private universities. Between ages 25-29 student enrollments in public universities are higher than enrollments in private universities. Once students reach the age of 40-49 they begin to enroll in private universities at a higher rate than public universities until they reach the age of 65 and older at which point they enroll in public and private universities at a higher rate than in for-profit universities. This research is significant because universities can begin to develop plans to determine the current status of andragogy in 4-year private, public, and for-profit universities offering baccalaureate degrees with the location of adult students identified. It is anticipated that as andragogy is increasingly practiced in the classroom, adult student interest in adult learning and education will grow.
