Eastern Europe's Silicon Rush
Woodard, Colin
Chronicle of Higher Education, v53 n27 pA45 Mar 2007
This article presents how the fast expansion of information technology industry in eastern Slovakia is putting a strain on its labor supply. Suddenly, computer-science graduates have become one of the former Eastern Bloc's greatest assets, attracting multinational technology companies hungry for skilled programmers, technicians, and engineers. Companies such as T-Systems, Siemens, Ness Technologies Inc., and others are putting in so much demand for computer science graduates that universities and technology companies have collaborated to meet the IT industry's labor demands. The two sectors have collaborated closely to strengthen the universities' computer-science departments and, ultimately, create a research-and-innovation hub in the long-struggling region.
