Measuring Future Worker Productivity via Business Email Message Creation: Implications for Education
Hagler, Barbara E.; Erthal, Margaret; Walzer, Dona; Anderson, Marcia A.
Delta Pi Epsilon Journal, v51 n3 p152-165 Fall 2009
Objective: This research was conducted to determine if relationships exist among college students' business email message productivity score and (a) email message quality score, (b) text keying method used to create email message, and (c) self-reported college English grade. Background: Email is increasingly the communication channel preferred for most internal and many external messages in today's organizations, replacing even face-to-face communication (Guffey, 2006). According to Hynes (2008), 56% of workers surveyed by USA Today believed that email increased their productivity. Research Procedures: Students enrolled in a business communication course at two Midwestern universities were the research subjects. Participants completed a timed writing and created an email in response to a provided scenario. Data were gathered the second week of the semester. Participants' text-keying methods were assessed, and compared with their email productivity skills and their performance on the most advanced English composition course taken. Results: Statistical significance was found when comparing text-keying methods and English grades with the productivity score (speed and quality) for the email. Students who received better English grades as well as those who used touch text keying created higher-quality email messages. Recommendations: Further research to determine factors that help students create high-quality messages in addition to the continued importance of requiring touch text keying skills for all students are recommended.
