Greenland, Sander – Journal of Environmental Health, 1978
Nitrites commonly occur in food and drinking water as additives, contaminants, or products of biological processes. These highly reactive substances combine with other commonly ingested substances to form potent carcinogens. Controls are needed on levels of nitrites and reactive contaminants in food and drinking water. (RE)

Gori, Gio Batta – Science, 1980
It is suggested that a system of relative standards be formulated which would compare utility of substances to their relative risk as carcinogens. This would define a range of use restrictions. Substances intended for specific uses would then be regulated according to these standards. (Author/RE)

Majumdar, Shyamal K.; Castellano, John M. – American Biology Teacher, 1977
Callus induction from species of Haworthia can be done quickly in the laboratory with minimal equipment to study tissue dedifferentiation and cellular redifferentiation. It is shown that the cultured cell can also be used to study and evaluate the effects of various mutagens, carcinogens, and pesticides in controlled environments. (Author/MA)

White, Jack E. – Phylon, 1977
Cancer mortality in U.S. blacks has greatly increased since 1950. This greater increase for blacks was found in 28 of the 56 most frequent cancers. Greater exposure to environmental carcinogens appears to be the main cause. This author recommends a thorough epidemiologic study of the rise in black cancer deaths. (Author/GC)

Neuberger, John S.; Pierce, J. Thomas; Lai, Sue Min – Journal of School Health, 1997
Investigated a possible cancer cluster among employees at one elementary school. Results of an industrial hygiene survey and health investigation found a marginally significant increase of risk for breast cancer among females who had worked for the school but no other excess in cancers. There were no significant employee exposures to carcinogens…

Milholland, Rebecca B. R.; Hines, Stefani D. – American Biology Teacher, 2004
A modified version "Tobacco Induced Mutations" of Ames assay experiment provides a meaningful context for students to learn about the concept of mutations by using a known carcinogen that is tobacco. This experiment shows toxicological concept of the dose/response relationship and visually demonstrates when a mutation have occurred in bacteria…

Prandota, Joseph – Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders, 2010
Worldwide, approximately 2 billion people are chronically infected with "Toxoplasma gondii" with largely yet unknown consequences. Patients with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) similarly as mice with chronic toxoplasmosis have persistent neuroinflammation, hypercytokinemia with hypermetabolism associated with enhanced lipid peroxidation, and…

Sullivan, Ralph J. – 1969
This report deals with the less ubiquitous, but potentially harmful, contaminants that are in our atmosphere. Thirty such pollutants have been identified and available information has been summarized in a series of reports describing their sources, distribution, effects, and control technology for their abatement. A total of 27 reports have been…

Haugh, Rita E. – 1979
After the Food and Drug Administration announced the results of testing of saccharin as a possible carcinogen and ruled that it should be banned, a public outcry brought about a delay in the ban. A study of magazine coverage of the reasons for the ban and information about the testing showed that in eleven mass circulation magazines, the reporting…
