This 10-chapter handbook (designed for science teachers and school administrators) describes known hazards associated with science teaching and provides information to develop a framework for local safety programs specifically designed to avoid or neutralize the effects of such hazards. Major areas addressed in the chapters include: (1) the nature of the problem; (2) uses of chemical, activity, and safety equipment inventories to assess safety needs; (3) physical hazards, health hazards, and hazard alerts; (4) planning for safety (including post-accident procedures and guidelines for modifying curriculum and instructional strategies); (5) chemical hazard control (examining purchasing, recordkeeping, storage, environmental protection, and the use, disposal, and labeling of chemicals; (6) potential hazards, control procedures, and first-aid measures related to laboratory animals, microorganisms, blood letting experiments, and field studies; (7) hazards and control procedures related to fire, radiation, model rocketry, extra-curricular activities, and student errands; (8) eye and face protection; (9) documentation (including inventories, accident reports, safety instruction records, and others); and (10) safety considerations related to the design of science laboratories.
