Feeding Student Success
Finkel, Ed
Community College Journal, v87 n1 p24-28 Aug - Sep 2016
As some community college students know all too well, it's difficult to concentrate on your studies if you are hungry, don't have a roof over your head, lack adequate transportation, or just had your laptop stolen and don't have the money for a new one. In some cases, it makes staying in school, period, very challenging. Recognizing the roadblocks that these life situations and others place in the path of their students, two-year colleges increasingly have been offering food pantries to put nourishment on students' tables and emergency grant programs to help with everything else. This article describes emergency grant programs and food pantries offered by the Sierra College Foundation (California), Stanly Community College (North Carolina), Howard Community College (Maryland), McLennan Community College (Texas), Lehigh Carbon Community College (Pennsylvania), Chippewa Valley Technical College (Wisconsin), and Santa Monica College (California).
