Further Reflections on Little Rock

The famous photo of Hazel Bryan jeering at Elizabeth Eckford as a mob helped drive Elizabeth from Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, on September 4, 1957, compels meditation on the nature of democratic politics. This scene is commemorative of the Little Rock events where school segregation was rampant. The author believes that the photo captures both Hazel and Elizabeth exhibiting etiquettes of citizenship that one cannot possibly accepts as his/her ideals. The author stresses the fact that both young women had been taught a particular etiquette of citizenship, which brought them into conflict, in order to recover a point made by Hannah Arendt about the events in Little Rock: adults were asking children to fight their battles. Arendt made this significant point in an essay entitled, "Reflections on Little Rock," with which the author largely disagrees, but Arendt core observation that adults--white and black--were asking of young people what they could not ask of themselves is correct and fundamental. This is one reason education is such a fraught issue in American politics; adults ask the young to learn in an environment that has been imagined but not yet widely realized. Another reason is the centrality of the schools to evolving democratic practice. The author concludes that the hardest work presently before everyone, however, is the generational task of revisiting the question of education and democracy. (Contains 1 footnote.)
