The Health Connection at Cedar Crest College
Baker, Kerrie; Boland, Kathleen; Laffey, Joan M.
NASPA Journal, v43 n3 p446-463 2006
The mission of Cedar Crest College, an independent women's college, is to provide students with excellent education that is grounded in the liberal arts and informed by humanistic values. In 2003, Student Affairs staff of the school looked closely at those students who were graduating and began to realize that though the college was providing graduates with an excellent education within their chosen area, it was not offering them everything possible to help them live healthier lives and avoid the problems associated with unhealthy lifestyles. In this article, the authors describe how the Student Affairs of Cedar Crest College developed the Health Connection, a program aimed to provide undergraduate women with the knowledge and tools to lead healthy and productive lives. The Health Connection promotes a culture that encourages and supports biological, psychological, social, and spiritual health. The goals of the program are achieved through education, experience, and research. The educational component is comprised of health and wellness courses, lectures, and conferences. Experiences include weight training, aerobics, swimming, yoga, meditation, and a competitive program focusing on the development of healthy behaviors. This article also includes a comprehensive longitudinal study of students' health beliefs and practices. The Health Connection has transformed the culture on this college campus and has changed the health practices of the campus community.
