The discovery and deciphering of the Rosetta stone led to a rediscovery of Egypt's contribution to world culture and civilization. This document outlines the growth of knowledge and education in ancient Egypt and emphasizes the disciplines of science, medicine, art, philosophy, agriculture, and engineering. Ancient Egypt's decline and the subsequent rise in Roman, Arab, and British influences are described, along with specific cultural, social, and political contributions to world civilizations. Since the 1952 revolution, caused in part by a drive for modernization, a number of educational reforms have occurred. The current higher educational system in Egypt is described in terms of admission requirements, programs, degrees, research activities, access to education, and educational standards for faculty. Lists of universities, colleges, and schools of art and music which contain information about location, age, governance, and the number of teachers and students are provided. The document concludes with an appraisal of some of the major problems in Egypt's current educational system. A map of Egypt with educational institutions denoted is included. (JHP)
