Cesar Chavez--Grade Six Model Curriculum and Resources.
California State Dept. of Education, Sacramento.
In this California state curriculum model for grade 6, "World History and Geography: Ancient Civilization," students learn that religious ideas have inspired and influenced the lives and actions of men and women, including Cesar Chavez. They see how his unselfishness, compassion for others, tolerance, and nonviolence have roots reaching back thousands of years. They discover how his dedication to improving the lives of others and his civic participation compares or contrasts to the role of citizens in ancient civilizations in various parts of the world. The curriculum presents a history/social science framework; addresses history/social science state standards; sets a context; poses a focus question; cites expected learning outcomes; discusses assessment; lists key concepts; suggests an essential vocabulary, primary sources, and visuals; and provides a detailed step-by-step procedure for implementing each of the seven lessons. Lessons are: (1) "Cesar E. Chavez: Education of the Heart"; (2) "Farming as a Way of Life"; (3) "Migration"; (4) "Impact of Pesticides/Herbicides on Farm Workers"; (5) "Understanding Surplus"; (6) "Cesar E. Chavez: Nonviolence"; and (7) "Service for Citizenship." A biography and photographs of Cesar Chavez are included. (BT)
