This guide presents a brief history of the Pueblo Indians of the Southwest, their traditions, and their art. Focus is on painting, a traditional art form that continues to be practiced, and on ceremonies and beliefs that are important elements of contemporary Pueblo society. The guide is designed for students of ages 10 through 14, but can be adapted easily for students of other ages. A map shows Pueblo locations in the Southwest. Six color slides, depicting works by Pueblo Indian artists, are provided along with descriptions of each work, and questions for discussion. Biographies of 10 Pueblo Indian artists, including those represented by the color slides, are given. The guide also provides cultural definitions and a key to the symbols used, a glossary of words and phrases, a bibliography, and suggested activities. (NP)
