Identifying Students Who Delay Starting the School Year
Clement, Russell W.; Witkowski, Carolyn
ERS Spectrum, v21 n4 p39-46 Fall 2003
Student enrollment in Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) increases by more than 10 percent between the first and 20th days of each school year. The present study was conducted to determine whether the increase is attributable to certain segments of the student population. The findings show secondary students, Black students, and students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch tended to delay entering school in Broward County. However, the analyses were conducted at the aggregated school level, thereby limiting examination of other underlying reasons, such as academic achievement, that may also contribute to delayed school entry.
