Popular Culture and the Library. Current Issues Symposium II. Proceedings.
Wiegand, Wayne A., Ed.
This collection of four speeches given at a symposium in October 1977 all deal with a particular aspect of popular culture--reflecting the values, convictions, and patterns of thought generally dispersed through and approved by society. The terms popular and culture are defined separately and two definitions for the complete term are considered--one dealing with products, the other with activities. The study of popular culture can bring people to a deeper understanding of today's society, therefore the use of popular culture materials, i.e., music, in the classroom, and in libraries is advocated. Guidelines for their acquisition and utilization are presented. Although there are problems connected with both, and these are discussed, there is a trend in this country toward the utilization of such materials. A popular culture librarian discusses this trend and his education and role in building such a collection at Bowling Green University. (MBR)
