Independent study is an instructional approach that can have enormous power in the classroom. It can be used successfully with students at all ability levels, even though it is often associated with gifted students. Independent study is an opportunity for students to study a subject of their own choosing under the guidance of a teacher. The affective power of the approach lies in the fact that each participant has a strong sense of ownership and responsibility for what is learned. A key reward of the approach for the student is the possibility of becoming an expert on a chosen topic. Another plus for independent study is that students are using higher thinking skills when involved in the project. This booklet provides a 10-step procedure for teachers setting up independent study in the classroom: (1) introducing the notion of independent study to the student; (2) designing curricula (the largest section, with specific suggestions for 15 different subjects); (3) readiness activities before independent study orientation; (4) assembling resources; (5) management; (6) suggestions for culminating activities; (7) modes of teacher evaluation; (8) student orientation; (9) student evaluation; and (10) suggested parent involvement. Also included is a list of possible solutions to students' common problems with independent study. (JMK)
