The Impact of a 15-Week Lifetime Wellness Course on Behavior Change and Self-Efficacy in College Students
Lockwood, Park; Wohl, Roy
College Student Journal, v46 n3 p628-641 Sep 2012
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a lifetime wellness course on changing students' global self-efficacy, physical self-efficacy, and wellness behavior. Methods: Seventy-one college students from a lifetime wellness course completed the TestWell Wellness Inventory--Standard Edition (National Wellness Institute, 1995; appendix B), General Self-Efficacy Scale (Jerusalem and Schwarzer, 1992; appendix C), and Physical Self-Efficacy Scale (PSES) (Ryckman, Robbins, Thornton & Cantrell, 1992; appendix D) at the beginning and end of a 15-week lifetime wellness course. A repeated measures design utilizing paired T-tests was applied to all independent variables. Results: Results indicated a significant change in physical fitness and nutrition (p = 0.001), physical self-perception (PSP), perceived physical ability (PPA) and physical self-efficacy (PSE; p = 0.0001). Conclusion: Results provide evidence that a lifetime wellness course can positively impact physical self-efficacy and help students successfully change behaviors in the areas of physical activity and nutrition.
