Communications Satellite Receiver Systems for Public Schools: A Technical Primer.

Designed to aid school districts contemplating use of some of the telecommunications services now available by satellite, this document contains information on home satellite receiving dishes (Television Receive-Only--TVROs), which can receive radio signals carrying television, sound, and data. This information includes: some factors involved in planning for implementation of a dish; an overview of satellite telecommunications; descriptions of receive-only systems; guidelines for successful programming, including video, audio, and teleconferences; a physical description of the dish; causes of electromagnetic noise; concern for aesthetics; suggestions for site selection, dish aiming, and dish mounts; equipment needed, including feedhorn, wave guide, low noise amplifier (LNA), downconverter, cables, and receivers; TVRO equipment warranty and servicing needs, including licenses, registrations, and costs; and speculations about the technology's future. Additional supporting materials consist of a self test on satellite receiving systems (with answers), a glossary of terms, and a bibliography. Lists of television channels devoted to education, college, teacher inservice, public affairs, ethnic, cultural, and news programming are appended, as well as a discussion of programming management and fees.
