Initiative for Transformative Sustainability Education at Wageningen University, The Netherlands
Wals, Arjen E. J.
Journal of Education for Sustainable Development, v5 n2 p251-255 Sep 2011
In this article, the author talks about a student-initiated Initiative for Transformative Sustainability Education (ITSE) at Wageningen University in The Netherlands which has led to the development of an undergraduate minor called Sustainability-in-Action consisting of four interlinked courses. When formally approved, the minor will be offered for the first time in April-June of 2012 with an anticipated enrolment of 15-20 students from a range of bachelor programs (e.g. environmental science, forestry and nature conservation, communication science and international development studies). The ITSE initiative was initiated when an inspired graduate student invited teachers and students to a talk about how education could contribute more "holistically" to fostering sustainability. ITSE's main concern has been to develop a framework for transformative sustainability education that addresses not only theoretical knowledge and practical skills, but also guides students to question their values, attitudes and behaviour, enables them to empower themselves and facilitates social and collaborative learning among a diversity of stakeholders. In a nutshell, ITSE wants to empower students to walk the talk of sustainable development within their own (expanding) sphere of influence. (Contains 1 figure.)
