A Thousand Lights [and] A Thousand Lights: Teacher and Parent Guide. Brothers Series.
Benton, Hope
This book for children (ages 8 to 14) and the accompanying teacher/parent guide present the story of two brothers, one of whom has a severe hearing impairment, who climb up Mt. Fuji in Japan. Information on the disability is presented subtly and incidentally to encourage the reader to relate more personally and foster a deeper level of acceptance and inclusion. The guide offers extensive learning activities related to the book. Included are pre-reading activities, suggestions for the inclusive learning environment, journal and writing activities, English language activities, guidelines for grouping in an inclusive and accessible learning environment, cooperative learning lessons (covering gravity, converting yen to dollars, cartography and storytelling, trains, volcanos, and the Japanese culture), and post-reading activities. Also included are charts to help the teacher adapt the environment and learning expectations to individual children with specific disabilities. Attached is a list of resources including organizations, books, computer software, and World Wide Web sites. (DB)
