New To Teaching: "Vegecating" Children
Bagshaw, Katherine; Barham, Hannah; Betts, Rebecca; Felton, Amie; Knatt, Joshua
Primary Science, n133 p30-32 May 2014
Student teachers, Katherine Bagshaw, Hannah Barham, Rebecca Betts, Amie Felton and Joshua Knatt, share their ideas on how to bridge the gap between statutory and non-statutory guidelines for food and nutrition with 8- to 10-year-olds. The teachers realized the health of children has become a focal point of concern for both parents and education practitioners. To address these concerns, the authors planned a series of lessons to bridge the gap between what they were required to teach and what the children wanted to learn. They felt that the most effective way of doing this was to use carousel activities on food groups in class as well as for homework tasks. The teachers state that they had to do their own homework in order to feel more confident and be more effective to answer questions the children raised, like: "What are the differences between different vitamins?" The teachers describe some of the misconceptions the children believed and how to bridge those gaps in learning, which resulted in undeniable benefits for both the children and themselves. The teachers concluded that by being flexible in their approach, and adapting planning to respond to the children's wants and questions, they achieved their intended learning when they were "vegecating" their class!
