An Examination of Assessment Scores between Students Who Attend Public Schools and Students Who Were Homeschooled Prior to Entering a Virtual Charter School

Virtual charter schools, emerging in the 1990s, are a recent development in the education field and reflect today's technology-oriented society. This study examined existing data to evaluate what, if any, difference existed between students who attended public school and those who were homeschooled prior to entering the virtual charter school. The research occurred during the first year of operation of the selected virtual charter school. Each student completed a pre and post Scantron Performance Assessment in math and reading. Scores were analyzed for any significant differences between students who previously attended a public school and those who were homeschooled. The study focused on evaluating data for any differing achievement levels occurring between public schooled and homeschooled students upon entering the virtual charter school and at the end of the school year. The secondary analysis of the Scantron Performance Assessments disclosed that there were no significant differences between the public schooled and homeschooled students either when coming into the virtual charter school or at the end of the school year. While no significant differences between public schooled and homeschooled students were discovered, perhaps the "aha" is simply that children with parents that are heavily involved in their education get the best results whatever their learning environment. Concerns have been expressed that virtual charter schools would draw students away from homeschooling. The data indicated the majority of students came from traditional public schools, then homeschooling, and very few from private school. This research also reinforced a belief for the need and importance of offering educational choices to families. Students have different learning styles. Educators have made changes in teaching to acknowledge and accommodate those learning styles. Going one step further and creating different learning environments or educational options is yet another way of addressing the individual student's needs.
