The proceedings of a conference (University of Wisconsin, 1961) on the methodology and quality of handwriting research are presented in this book. After introductory remarks on current educational research, papers are presented on the following topics: (1) current (l960) teaching practices in handwriting in the United States, (2) the use of "round" writing for easier and more legible handwriting, (3) physiological and motor correlates of handwriting legibility, (4) learning theory and pedagogical practice, (5) sensory feedback mechanisms of handwriting motions and their neurogeometric basis, (6) children's perception of the handwriting task, (7) the legibility of adult manuscript, cursive, or manuscript-cursive handwriting styles, and (8) the evaluation of legibility in handwriting. Authors of papers are Virgil E. Herrick, Nora Okada, H. Callewaert, G. Lawrence Rarick, Theodore L. Harris, O. H. Mowrer, Karl U. Smith, Thomas J. Murphy, Elaine M. Templin, and Adrienne Erlebacher. Each paper is followed by the remarks of discussants and by the author's reaction to the discussion. Statements on future research for handwriting improvement, with comments on these proposals, conclude the book. (JM)
