Urinary incontinence, defined as the involuntary leakage of urine, is a common health problem in both women and men. Children may also suffer from this condition. Management and treatment of urinary incontinence depends primarily on the specific type of incontinence and the underlying problem causing the leakage for a given patient. Because treatment for urinary incontinence is based on symptoms a person is experiencing, patients must play an active role in helping to choose the therapy which will be best for them in relation to their lifestyle and treatment goals. Treatments for urinary incontinence are generally divided into either non-surgical or surgical treatments. Each type of treatment has specific risks and benefits, and also varying degrees of success.
