The Department of Humanities Writing Program.
Umpqua Community Coll., Roseburg, OR.
Designed for students, faculty, and others interested in the writing program at Umpqua Community College (UCC) in Oregon, this booklet clarifies the specific function and scope of the writing courses offered by UCC's Department of Humanities. Section I states the department's objectives (e.g., to provide a core curriculum meeting the requirements of vocational, terminal-degree, transfer, and non-specialized students; to provide a sound basis in language arts and communication skills; and to offer an opportunity to examine the cultural values expressed in the humanities). After section II reviews the purpose of the booklet, section III presents the philosophy of writing of UCC. Section IV outlines the English Composition Sequence, including information on requirements for entry into the sequence and descriptions of each of its four courses. These descriptions articulate course requirements and student objectives. In section V, two other writing courses are examined, "Technical Report Writing" and "Imaginative Writing." Section VI recommends grading standards and offers definitions, while section VII offers samples of challenge examinations for two courses. Finally, section VIII presents Bloom's taxonomy of educational objectives. (LAL)
