The review of the literature related to newspaper reading presented in this paper provides a useful background to educators seeking to broaden their understanding of newspaper research and its implications for classroom practice. The research is divided into readability studies, readership studies, and cognition, comprehension, and text analysis studies. It covers such topics as (1) typography, (2) newspaper design, (3) trends in readership, (4) play theory of newspaper reading, (5) frame analysis of news, and (6) text analysis of newspaper reading.
