District Administration, v46 n4 p30-32, 34-35 Apr 2010
When Saul Lerner became director of physical education, athletics, and health for the Bellmore-Merrick (New York) School District 14 years ago, football, soccer, basketball, and floor hockey were staples of most physical education classes on Long Island and around the rest of the country. The mindset of physical educators was to emphasize sports that were generally watched on TV. That mindset, however, has begun to change--spurred by students' reduced appetite for team-oriented sports, their increased appetite for junk food, and their shifting redefinition of "activity" to mean surfing the Web and texting. Lerner said that fewer and fewer kids today are playing sports and more are obese. This article illustrates how Lerner and his district have responded to these changing times through an alternative program, turning the conventional definition of physical education on its head.
