Instruction Note: Classroom TRAFFIC--A Metaphor for Encouraging Discussion
DiMarco, Danette
Teaching English in the Two-Year College, v32 n4 p403-405 May 2005
The exercise that this author calls "TRAFFIC" encourages student-centered classroom discussions that aid students in better understanding the reflective, affective, and effective components of oral communication practice. Entering a dialogue is akin to being in traffic, and traffic is a powerful metaphor to use when talking with students about classroom discussion because it assumes that instructors are able to move or have difficulty moving because of the conditions of the current landscape. And whether they are hindered or not in the expression of their values depends on how closely the people, a critical part of the landscape, follow the basic rules that ensure the safest environment for all. This instructional note presents a brief description of this exercise. The method may be applied in introductory or advanced ways in literature or composition classrooms.
