One in a series designed to assist Arizona elementary and junior high school teachers in developing children's traffic safety skills, this curriculum guide for grade 3 contains seven lessons on bicycles and an appendix on conducting a bicycle rodeo. Introductory information provided for the teacher includes basic highway safety concepts, stressing communication methods for highway users, visibility and judgmental problems, predictability of behavior, and the traffic/pedestrian environment; instructions for using this program, explaining evaluation methods; Arizona laws and Mesa city ordinances governing bicycle operation; and general rules for bicycle safety. The lessons cover the following subjects: bicycle fit and maintenance; care and use of brakes; rules for safe bicycling; mixing with traffic; security for bicycles not in use; and courtesy. The appendix gives information on conducting bicycle rodeos, covering the topics of sponsors, technical assistance, and planning. For each lesson a complete plan is provided, incorporating objectives, key points, a list of needed materials, suggested basic and enrichment activities, student assessment procedures, and additional resource materials.
