Buen Viaje: Mutually Beneficial Tourism. A Four-Lesson Unit about Traveling with Care in Mexico for Grades 8-12 and Adult Learners in English and Spanish.
Mattson, Alexandra; Ruiz, Octavio; Sommers, Meredith
Intended for secondary students, this curriculum unit (in both English and Spanish) provides a look into Mexico's second largest industry, tourism. The curriculum unit of four lessons includes general information about tourism, maps, stories, and a code of behavior for travelers. The unit enumerates learner objectives, defines vocabulary and concepts, and suggests teaching strategies. Students identify a variety of perspectives through readings, discussions, and role play exercises. Four popular vacation sites--Tijuana, Cancun, Rosario, and the Mayan world--are examined through the eyes of Mexicans who live and work there. In the unit's final lesson, students design an international tourist site in their own community that reflects the concepts of "mutually beneficial tourism." A bibliography identifies 8 tourism agencies and organizations; 6 books, periodicals, and Web sites; and 6 guides to Mexico. Includes a map of Mexico. (BT)
