I Am Your Child. Quality Child Care: Making the Right Choice for You and Your Child. [Videotape].
I Am Your Child Foundation, Beverly Hills, CA.
Finding the right child care is often challenging for parents, but it is one of the most important decisions a parent will ever make. This videotape is intended to help parents with the process of evaluating child care options. The 30-minute video is presented in seven parts. Part 1, "Choosing Child Care," discusses why quality child care is important for children's healthy development and what one should look for when choosing care. Part 2, "Your Child's Caregiver," presents questions to ask a potential caregiver, discusses the importance of finding out the caregiver's experience and training, and identifies important characteristics of good caregivers. Part 3, "Family Care," presents questions for family caregivers, with videotaped footage of children in a family care setting. Part 4, "Care in Your Own Home," describes various types of in-home care, including relative care and care by a nanny. Part 5, "The First Day," deals with parents' and children's emotional adjustment to the first day in child care, noting how one's emotions reflect the positive bond between parent and child. Part 6, "Working with Your Caregiver," discusses the importance of parents staying involved with their child's caregiver on a daily basis; communicating with their child's caregiver, especially in relation to transitions, toilet training, and discipline; and how to deal with disagreements with their child's caregiver. Part 7, "Working with Your Employer" concerns ways employers can support child care for their employees' children. The video concludes by noting the importance of parents staying involved in their child's child care placement and becoming an agent for positive change. (KB)
